Pillars of Academic Advising
NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising promotes four "pillar" documents that serve as guiding principles and affirm the role of academic advising in higher education as a teaching and learning experience and central to the institutional mission.
NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising proposes, entrenched in the teaching and learning mission of higher education, three components of academic advising:
- Curriculum (what advising deals with)
- Pedagogy (how advising does what it does)
- Student learning outcomes (the result of academic advising)
NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising has identified these core values reflective of the educational/cultural contexts of global academic advising environments, as well as aligned to professional practices, competencies, and philosophies of academic advising:

- Inclusivity
- Integrity
- Professionalism
- Respect
NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising identified the core competencies to support academic advising, guide training & development, and promote contributions of advising. Three content categories are established:
- Conceptual - Context for the delivery of academic advising
- Informational - Substance of academic advising
- Relational - Skills for academic advisors to conduct the concepts and information from the other components
