News/Notes for Undergraduate Academic Advisors: When to Use the Academic Student Request Form? | Spring 26 UNIFI Courses with Capacities for Enrollment
When to Use the Academic Student Request Form?
- Helping students navigate UNI’s academic policies is part of what makes advising so impactful. One tool that often comes up is the Academic Student Request form—but when should you recommend it?
- It’s the official way for students to request exceptions to academic policies. Think of it as the “special circumstances” form for unique situations.
- When should you recommend undergraduate students use it? (See a complete list of all undergraduate student request types)
- Course Substitutions or Waivers of Requirements
- Change of Registration - Add/Drop after the deadline due to extenuating circumstances?
- Exceptions - Such as Register for an Overload | Receiving Graduate Credit as an Undergraduate Student
- Other Policy Exceptions - Anything outside standard procedures that needs formal approval
- Advisor Tips
- Clarify the Why: Make sure students understand the reason for the request.
- Set Expectations: Approval isn’t automatic - the justification (and information) which may require documentation matters.
- Guide the Process: Point students to the right portal to access and complete the form. (See a complete list of the approval process for all undergraduate student request types)

Is Your Student Questioning their Current Major?
- Help them Pivot with Purpose by referring them to the Office of Academic Advising. Advisors offer personalized support to help students explore:
- Major, minor, and certificate options | Reasons for changing majors (e.g., lack of interest, career goals, academic challenges) | Self-assessments like FOCUS 2 or Strong Inventory | Goal-setting and decision-making strategies
- Encourage students to schedule an appointment or complete the Academic Discuss Your Major Options Request Form.
- Temporary location for Fall 2025: Bartlett Hall 0089 | 319-273-3406 | academic-advising@uni.edu
- As a faculty or staff member, you can complete this referral form to start the outreach to a student considering changing their major.
