General UNIFI Course Notes
  • UNIFI Sections offered before 9:00 a.m. and after 2:59 p.m.
    • This was the breakdown of seats to be available throughout the summer for new student orientation enrollments on May 6, 2026:
      •  8:00 a.m. MWF (251 / 8%) | After 3:00 p.m. MWF (153 / 5%) | 8:00 a.m. TTH (213 / 7%) | 3:30p.m. or After TTH (184 / 7%)
    • As indicated above, there are limited UNIFI course sections scheduled outside of the 'Prime Time' hours (9:00 a.m. – 2:59 p.m.) for the Fall 2025 semester.
    • However, we need to encourage students to consider a course at one of these times so as these are not the only courses that are remaining at our last orientation sessions in July!
RELS 1060 American Religious Diversity

  • Both sections are First Year Only (FYO)
  • Over 60% of Americans identify as Christian. What do you know about the other 40%? American Religious Diversity explores religious ideas, figures, practices, and communities beyond mainstream Christianity in the United States. This course considers instances of religious intolerance experienced by minority communities in the United States and how religious minorities have contributed to American ideas about religious freedom and other aspects of American democracy.
  • Skills Developed through the Course: Critical thinking (about sensitive topics especially), religious literacy, working on teams, written and oral communication, (Humanities-based) data analysis, and self-awareness.
  • As a UNIFI course, this class contributes to the United States Studies and Civic Literacy, Engagement, and the Humanities certificates.
  • No textbook costs to students! The instructor will be using digital materials through Rod Library and open access materials.

Civic Education Minor and UNIFI Certificate
  • The Center for Civic Education offers both a minor and UNIFI certificate in Civic Literacy, Engagement and the Humanities.
  • Civic literacy is a vital component of life and work in modern society. The acquisition of civic literacy provides students with opportunities to develop holistic habits of mind that contribute to a meaningful life as well as the practical knowledge and skills to help them navigate community life that are necessary for navigating the workplace in the 21st century.
  • The 18 hour interdisciplinary minor
    • Helps students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions of civic literacy in tandem with the foundational knowledge, skills and dispositions of the humanities that support the flourishing of a democratic society.
  • The 9 hour UNIFI certificate
    • Emphasizes training in civic literacy and the humanities that address how to contribute to the flourishing of a democratic society.
    • Introduces students to the knowledge, skills and dispositions associated with civic literacy and the humanities disciplines that prepare them for a life of meaningful engagement with democratic processes at the local, regional, national and international levels.
